Meanderings around Europe by train – and other stuff

Day 9 - To Home Sweet Home

After a bath in the tiniest bath ever made at the Lille Europe Hilton hotel I slept pretty well, waking up moderately refreshed for a change.

It was a relaxed start to the day - a decent breakfast in the hotel restaurant - and plenty of time to pack the suitcase up and collect our thoughts.

Even so, we got to the Eurostar ticket gates early enough to have to stand around waiting for them to open - and then get sent to the office because we are travelling on Interrail passes (we did get to go through an unmarked secret door in the office though!)

The security theatre was pretty much standard - pointless for a routine train journey. Sacha's false joints set the alarms off, so at least we know they were switched on.

Eurostar fed us a couple of bowls of strange stuff - I haven't a clue what I've eaten - Sacha didn't manage finish hers but she did wash it down with a little bottle of white wine.

Despite arriving a couple of minutes late into St Pancras we got our intended train easily. Happily, St Pancras Station have improved their announcements when two trains are waiting on the same platform - so it's slightly less confusing.

We were fed and watered by EMR but the baguettes went in my bag for later. The ginger cake was very nice, and the tea was acceptable.

As is our usual practice - we got a taxi from the station in Leicester - it's not cheap, but it's so much easier this way.

The cat was pleased to see us, and we had no surprises thanks to Kasa - our daughter - who'd been looking after things for us. As
