Old People meandering around Europe by train & ferry

Living in the cloud

When we woke up we were still in the clouds - it was damp and very misty.
It was chilly walking to breakfast in the main hotel.

We walked round the small lake - really more of a pond than a lake, but there were seats and we could watch the cloud rolling in and out over the water and the trees.

misty lake There is a big hotel next to the small lake which an information board told us has been a miner's sanatorium - it's rare to see references to the pre-1989 period in this way which is a shame.

We came back to our hotel a different way, and it's quite obvious that there are a lot more facilities being planned, although construction seems to have paused.

Thinking about construction, led me to considering the architecture of Štrbské Pleso.
In a previous holiday I dismissed hovercraft as part of what we thought was the future, but the buildings erected here for the 1970 ski championships have fared much better than the hovercraft.
The old men who had an iron grip on the old East may have made a lot of errors, but the architectural vision of modernism prevalent in the 70s is still appealing.
It's hard to pin it down, but it's bold with clean lines and with a liberal use of glass, steel and concrete.
Unfortunately, so much of the good is now plastered with advertising and inappropriate 'improvements' which do nothing for the overall impact.

While the old East has gone, the buildings remain to remind us that there once was a different way, and a different vision of community. Maybe the circle will turn.

railway station After a sumptuous lunch of cake and crisps we walked back to the main lake. It seemed like most of Slovakia were there too - natural for a Sunday I suppose. The sun was shining and there was only the slightest hint of a chill in the air.

Lake and mountains

After sitting in the sun while I tried to draw the mountain and the ski jump, we walked around to the restaurant again for more expensive limonady which turned out to be a bit of a mistake!
The hotel terrace - overlooking the lake - was in the shade, and the only warmth was from the sun! I lent my jacket to my ever lovin' wife and I started to shiver in my jumper.
On the walk back the difference between the parts in the shade & sun was remarkable.

Well, that's our last day here done (apart from the pizza). Up bright and early in the morning to get the case packed, because we have to leave the room by 10.
More trains tomorrow.
