On Saturday we woke up passing the Westermsnn islands - sparsley populated volcanic rocks to the south of the Icelandic mainland. Dramatic wildlife havens for the main part.
As these receded into the distance life on the ship settled into a day of idleness. My wife sampled the hot tub:' I finished another book. She did a successful art session: I dozed in the sun.
After another dressing up dinner there was another show - but not the planned event. There had been some sort of technical hitch, so three was an impromptu performance by three of the cast vocalists, which was probably better than the expected song & dance routine.
I don't sleep too well although I'm not sure why, I woke up on Sunday morning tired and a little irritable.
Fine food, good company, and constant stimulation awaits.
In the morning we went to one of the series of talks by the writer Gervais Phynn. These have been well received by everyone we've spoken to, and we've watched one of the previous talks on the cabin TV (all talks are recorded for later viewing). He is certainly an accomplished and engaging speaker.
However I found something intangible that felt a bit 'off' about his attitudes and approaches to life. His life seems to be rooted in a purely middle class Englishness that is stuck in a fog of 1950s nostalgia.
It may appeal to most of the Fred Olsen fan base, but it left me uneasy.
Not to worry - lunch was as good as always. We opted for the buffet as usual and had a salad with a view on our afternoon treat.
The afternoon treat was Afternoon Tea in the top deck Observation Lounge. And jolly good it was too.
The Borealis catering team seem to have the knack of getting servings spot on - and the sandwiches, tiny scones and little cakes were just right.
I'd maybe have liked a bit more choice of teas, and perhaps a bigger tea pot, but that's a tiny quibble.
After tea, we sat in the lounge and watched the drizzle. The sea certainly wasn't smooth, and the visibility was limited. It was our first day of less than good weather.
Not really wanting an evening meal we sat and read our books until we were the last people sitting in the bar by the pool and then went down to listen to some singing before going to bed.
