Lyon is a great place. We eat at Five Guys burger place yesterday evening - we were too tired to go anywhere that needed decent manners. Sat outside and watched the world go by in all it's splendid glory.
I certainly slept extremely well last night, and I think Sacha did too. It's an old fashioned hotel - and so much the better for it. They gave us a decent breakfast and looked after our bags while we went sightseeing.
We went up the funiculaire and blimey! What a view - you could see right across to the Swiss Alps. Absolutely stunning.
We had a quick look at the basilica before going down again and collecting our case from the hotel.
Then it all went wrong. Goodness knows what I did but we ended up going back the way we'd come on one of the metro lines. I was struggling to resolve the situation, so got out of the underground at Hotel de Ville to get a Google Map fix and got on a bus which took us almost to Part Dieu station.
Of course, by this time we'd missed our 1220 train to Miramas. The only feasible option was now to get a TGV to Marseille. This involved getting a pair of €20 reservations. The very helpful man in the ticket office sorted this for me - except, when I looked at the reservations, he'd given us 2nd class seats despite having a discussion about the pass being 1st.
And breathe. With our correct reservations we got on the train - only to have to have an argument with une dame française who was convinced she was in her correct seat - eventually other passengers weighed in on my side and with ill grace she went off to the correct carriage. And breathe.
It looked like a tight connection at Marseille, but it wasn't busy and we got on the local train with time to spare.
The scenery was as great as predicted on this seaside / clifftop route to La Couronne.
It looked like a tight connection here (notice a theme?) to get the bus, but again, no problem! Except..... Once on the bus I couldn't see a screen showing the stops, so we ended up getting off a couple of stops beyond where I'd intended. This was fine but it was an extremely steep road back up to where we needed to be - poor old Sacha was seriously gasping for breath.
Still, we got into our very splendid accommodation. I've been to Aldi to get some food, and Sacha is in the jacuzzi.
What a day!
