Meanderings around Europe by train – and other stuff

Binz - day 1 (now with photos!)

We had a decent lie in this morning knowing that there was nothing specific to get up for and breakfast was available until 11. It was a decent breakfast but strangely lacking in croissants.

Mind you - I had severe indigestion in the night, so I needed a bit of sleep to recover. Was it the pasta, or was it the wine?

When we got back to our room after breakfast housekeeping had been to make the beds - and despite having rinsed them out ourselves, had put our (very few) used pots in the dishwasher!

It was cool outside when we left the hotel to go to the lake - there was a weekly market advertised - a very poor turnout of sellers and nothing particularly interesting (although we thought about buying a brush for the cat!) It was quite pleasant just sitting by the lake.

We walked along the lakeside path stopping at the scientific displays of prisms, and of mass & motion. Our destination was the Kleinbahnhof - the station for the narrow gauge railway known as 'Raging Roland'. It didn't seem worth going for a ride, so we sat in the station cafe with coffee and cheesecake. The station is a passing place for the single track line so we saw two steam engines for the price of a cup of coffee! This is the first photo.

We decided to see if it was really true that our Binzer-Buche cards gave us free bus travel - and they do! When the bus eventually arrived we stayed on it all way to Prora.

Prora is a story in itself and I encourage you to Google it. Suffice to say it was a monster Nazi construction project 4.5km long intended for 20,000 holidaymakers - the buildings were never finished and The Collossus of The North has had various uses and misuses ever since.

Sadly - in my view - at German Unification there was no plan for Prora and it was sold off piecemeal to private investors who have changed the estate with little regard for the history.

The Museum made a good show of explaining the history, and the context of its planning and construction.

These two photos show how a redeveloped part of one of the blocks abuts an undeveloped part, and the other shows how the development is uniform white into the distance.

We got the bus back - but couldn't understand why the driver wouldn't let my wife sit in the seats designated for people with walking sticks. Ho hum.

Tired feet. No plan for food yet.
