Meanderings around Europe by train – and other stuff

Molli train & Stralsund

We both slept really badly last night - I'm putting my night down to the Schnitzel - and I've had a grumbly stomach all day. My wife is struggling with her knee and back. Sigh, the joy of ageing!

At Wismar station we learned that the train line towards Berlin is still closed - so whatever perturbed us on Sunday is still a problem.

The train from Wismar has the smallest first class area I've ever seen - 6 seats in total with possibly less leg room than in Standard class, but... the seats were leather. You do get to watch the driver though.

We went as far as Bad Doberan where we joined the Molli Bahn. This is a steam railway - part tourist line and part local transport - which runs along the streets of Bad Doberan. It was instructive seeing the engine driver motioning to a BMW driver to move out of the way, without slowing down!

We travelled to Hellingendam (?) where we had a look at the sea and a cup of coffee - the wind was freezing and the sea was grey. Hellingendam quite clearly doesn't want visitors who aren't staying in the extremely expensive hotel - the prom is a one way walk to a series of locked gates.

At Rostock we took the opportunity to get on the earlier local train to Stralsund rather than waiting for the ICE service - a minor error as this was crowded and uncomfortable.

We were dodging rain showers all day, and managed to get only slightly damp. But, my, it's chilly for June.

The hotel room as a kitchenette so I'm going shopping shortly to find something easy to eat ta to won't challenge my sensitive stomach. Track still closed towards Berlin from Wismar Tiniest 1st class compartment ever. Slept badly rain in the night
